The Morning and Evening Star Candlestick Patterns

In this post I will be covering the morning star and evening star candlestick patterns. Both are potent in identifying a potential reversal of price (current market trend). If you are new or need a refresher on candlesticks, you can start here.

The Morning and Evening Star:

These candlestick patterns are reversal candlestick patterns and they consist of three candles. See picture below of their formation… a more detailed explanation follows in the next section.

The Morning Star in Context:

The Morning Star forms after a decline. The first candle is bearish and has a long body. The second candle has a small body (color doesn’t matter) that doesn’t touch the body of the first candle. And the third candle is a bullish candle which doesn’t touch the body of the preceding candle. The third candle’s body moves into the body of the first candle (the longer this candle is, the better). See picture below:

The Evening Star in Context:

The Evening Star forms after an advance. The first candle is bullish and has a long body. The second candle has a small body (color doesn’t matter) that doesn’t touch the body of the first candle. And the third candle is a bearish candle that moves into the body of the first candle (the longer this candle’s body is, the better). Also, the third candle’s body doesn’t touch the body of the preceding candle. See picture below:

Note 1: The ideal morning and evening star has a gap between the bodies of the first and second candles, as well as the second and the third candles, but many traders aren’t that stringent and.

Note 2: When the second candle is a doji (open and close is the same  / almost the same), it is called a morning doji star and evening doji star respectively.

Finally:

These patterns can’t be traded blindly whenever they show up on a chart, but should be traded in context of the market context, like trading them from areas of value such as support and resistance for example.

Thank you so much for reading. Hope you and your loved ones are well and safe.
